Live From the KPFA Crafts & Music Fair

In our second hour...

Interviews with artists, craftspersons, and musicians participating in KPFA's 36th Annual Crafts & Music Fair.

The fair is Saturday and Sunday December 8th & 9th from 10am-6pm.  Come to the SF Concourse at 8th & Brannan Streets on Sunday between 10 & 11am, and say "hi" to the Sunday Salon crew, and other members of the KPFA staff.

In our First Hour...

Former CIA director Robert Gates is President Bush's choice to take over for Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who resigned earlier this month.  Ahead of confirmation hearings in before the Senate Armed Services Committee, we'll take a look at what the new Defense Secretary faces -- an increasingly chaotic Iraq, a possible U.S. attack on Iran, and growing public dissatisfaction with the Bush Administration's handling of security matters.

Our guests:

Reese Erlich, journalist who writes on the Middle East, and co-author of "Target Iraq:  What the News Media Didn't Tell You," just returned from Iraq and Iran.

John Prados, is a senior fellow at the Naitonal Security Archives in Washington, and author of the book, "Hoodwinked:  The Documents That Reveal How Bush Sold Us a War."

Winslow Wheeler is the Director of the Straus Military Reform Project at the Center for Defense Information.

The State of California seized control of the Oakland Unified School District from the school board in 2003, in an attempt to pull the district out of debt.  Many educators, parents and students resent the state's
control, and question its administration of the district.  Next Saturday, the Oakland Education Association convenes the "Crisis in Public Education" Conference at Laney College.  We'll talk with students and
conference participants.

settlement known as Jonestown in Guyana.  A new film, "Jonestown:  The Life
and Death of People's Temple" (www.firelightmedia.org) delves deep into the
formation of the People's Temple, and how more than 900 -- including the
Temple's leader, Jim Jones, ended up dead in Guyana.

So did Kriss Worthington, city councilmember for Berkeley's District 6. And, Richmond city councilmember Gayle McLaughlin was elected mayor of that city, making her the first Green Party mayor in the Bay Area, and the first Green Party mayor of any major U.S. city.
